Overview

FORGE.labs is my ongoing design engineering studio and product ecosystem. It was created around a simple belief: design and development should not exist as separate disciplines. The best digital products emerge when visual design, interaction design, and engineering are treated as a single process. FORGE serves as both a studio and a platform for experimentation, tooling, and open-source products.

The Challenge

Many modern design systems and UI libraries create dependency on external platforms, proprietary tooling, or complex workflows. I wanted to explore an alternative approach that prioritised ownership, flexibility, and developer experience. The challenge became building tools that accelerate development while still leaving teams in complete control of their codebase.

The Approach

At the core of FORGE is the idea of owned code. Rather than shipping runtime dependencies, FORGE products are designed to generate files directly into projects - allowing developers to customise, extend, and maintain everything themselves. This approach removes lock-in while preserving the speed benefits of modern tooling. The ecosystem was built to work at both the studio level and the individual product level, maintaining a coherent identity across all of its parts.

Design System

FORGE's visual identity reflects the values of the ecosystem: precise, editorial, and technically considered. A dark base with warm gold accents creates a distinctive presence that feels professional without being corporate. Typography bridges editorial display design with code-like precision. The system scales across multiple products while maintaining a recognisable brand thread throughout.

Outcome

FORGE has become both a public portfolio of my design engineering approach and a testing ground for new ideas. The project continues to evolve as new tools, workflows, and experiments are added to the ecosystem.

Key Takeaways
  • 01

Owned code is a product philosophy, not just a technical decision. It fundamentally changes the relationship developers have with their tools.

  • 02

Building a multi-product ecosystem requires a brand system that scales without fragmenting. Identity must work at the studio level and the product level simultaneously.

  • 03

The best design systems are invisible in use and opinionated in structure.

  • 04

Open source work is a long-term investment in credibility, community, and creative momentum.
